PANORAMIC RADIOGRAPH PROTOCOL Sligo-Leitrim

Panoramic Radiographs will normally be approved in situations where there is:

  1. A realistic suspicion, based on a clinical examination, of active pathology outside the alveolar bone.
  2. Symptomatic 3rd Molar problems where treatment is likely to follow.
  3. Trauma involving more than one tooth or with a suspicion of underlying bony damage.
  4. Periodontal involvement involving generalised pocketing of more than 5mm, where the equivalent diagnostic information needed would require more than 3 intra-oral radiographs to be taken.
  5. Multiple extractions, where the equivalent diagnostic information needed would require more than 3 intra-oral radiographs to be taken.

Panoramic radiographs might be approved where there is: A case of genuine concern to the dentist on matters outside of the above list, but sufficiently unusual to place it outside the confines of "routine" dentistry. Panoramic radiographs will ordinarily not be approved for:

  1. Assessment of non-symptomatic 3rd molars.
  2. Prior to full denture construction unless any of the list above apply.
  3. Routine Screening of patients.
  4. Periodontal treatment involving pocketing of less than 5mm.
  5. Anything whatsoever outside the remit of the DTSS (such as private orthodontic work for a medical card patient).
  6. Referral to back to the Board for specialist treatment, unless any of the first list apply.

All requests for approval of payment for a panoramic must be accompanied by a detailed description of the situation citing the condition involved, the teeth involved, and any other data relevant to the request.
