Homo sapiens Cro-Magnon Discovered on a cliff in 1868 (during the construction of railway lines in Les-Eyzies, France) Cro-Magnon , meaning "big cliff", represents the earliest modern humans from western Europe. Note the large brain capacity and high forehead. Many feel Cro-Magnon is more similar in appearance to modern Africans than modern Europeans, suggesting that this population came from Africa or Asia. Size: 8 1/2"L, 6"W, 6 1/4"H
Origin: Les-Eyzies, France
Age: 30,000 years old

This specimen was discovered in 1998 in the Rhine River deposits in Southwest Germany near Mainz. Since it was dredged from a gravel pit the stratum can only be assumed: however, the association with Mammuthus, Megaceros and Equis, as well as the state of mineralization, suggests an age of at least 10,000 to 30,000 years. It also matches the description of other Cro-Magnon type hominid fossils from the area. Size: 8"L, 5 3/4"W, 5 3/4"H
Origin: Southwest Germany
Age: 30,000 to 10,000 years old
