WASTE DISPOSAL
Items to be disposed of in Contaminated
Waste container
Every item that might be contaminated with blood or saliva, including:-
- Saliva ejectors/disposable suction tips
- Cups
- Tissues
- Gauze/cotton rolls
- Gloves
- Face masks
- Sticky covers/cling film
- Used disinfectant wipes
Items to be disposed of in Sharps
bin
- Needles
- Cartridges
- Burs and prophy brushes
- Extracted teeth/roots
- Scalpel blades
- Suture needles
- Matrix bands
- Orthodontic wires/bands
- Files/reamers/spiral fillers
- Irrigating syringes (single use)
N.B. Sharps containers should never be more than 2/3 full for safety reasons.
Management of Gross Spillage of Blood, Saliva or Vomit
- Wear gloves, Mask and Eye Protection
- Cover spillage with Virkon powder for 3 minutes
- Clean spillage with paper towel
- Wash/wipe area with 1% Virkon solution
- Remove gloves and discard into Contaminated Waste.
- Wash and dry hands.
Radiographs
- Seat patient and place lead apron.
- Select exposure.
- Apply gloves and place film.
- Position tube.
- Expose and remove film.
- Switch off unit and dispose of gloves in Contaminated Waste after exposure.
- Clean tube head and switches with disinfectant wipe.
- Wipe exposed film packet with disinfectant before placing and opening in Periomat.
- Contaminated film holders should be returned to surgery and rinsed, dried
and autoclaved in the usual manner.
Impressions
- Wash impression under cold running water to remove traces of saliva, blood
and food debris.
- Immerse impression in disinfectant solution (Perform) and leave for
the time determined by manufacturer's instruction
- Place in plastic bag and seal
- Label bag indicating time and date of disinfection. Keep a record of disinfection
in the surgery.
N.B. Use only disposable trays.
N.B.B. Check label on returned laboratory work to ensure that it has been disinfected
before placing in the patients mouth.
